About Us
The Senior Ag Water Rights Alliance (SAWRA), a growing coalition of agricultural producers and senior water rights holders, is committed to preserving local control of water and improving legal protections for water rights in Montana. Our members, spanning from Valier to Red Lodge, Willow Creek to Culbertson, collaborate with agricultural producers and experienced professionals to actively engage at all government levels. Our unwavering commitment is to safeguard Montana's most vital resource—water.
Our Mission
SAWRA actively engages in Montana's water rights discourse, aiming to preserve effective practices with a focus on local control and protecting the established first-in-time, first-in-right law in Montana. Rooted in safeguarding farmers and ranchers, we empower water users by minimizing government burdens and ensuring fair dispute resolution. Our advocacy is guided by the principle of local decision-making, recognizing the unique needs and historical uses of each community in the state.
Our Core Principles
Prioritize Local Control
Advocate for control at the most local level, and ensure decision makers understand community needs, traditions, and uses.
Address Systemic Problems
Focus on proven, legitimate, problems, and seek minimally disruptive solutions.
Democratic Process
Insist on clear, understandable remedies approved by Montana's people through the legislative process, to ensure public endorsement for effective water rights management, not DNRC rule making.
